EARL "THE BIG CAT" LLOYD - NBA Pioneer & 75th Anniversary Celebration

Earl "The Big Cat" Lloyd was the first Black player to appear in an NBA game on October 31, 1950 with the Washington Capitols.

Lloyd's resilience, vision, and leadership fundamentally reshaped the game, laying the foundation for a more dynamic league and inspiring future generations to dream bigger and push further.

Lloyd played 560 games in nine NBA seasons.

  • Named All-Conference 3x and All-American 2x at West Virginia State
  • Served in the Korean War with the U.S. Army
  • Member of Syracuse Nationals 1955 NBA Championship Team
  • Played for NBA Teams: Washington Capitols ('50-'51), Syracuse Nationals ('52-'58), and Detroit Pistons ('58-'50)
  • Member of Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Hall of Fame
  • Inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
  • An Earl Lloyd statue was unveiled at West Virginia State University ('14)
