Basketball Operations Staff - Derrick Alston

Title: Assistant Coach
Alston joins the Herd for his second season as assistant coach. A native of Hoboken, New Jersey, Alston attended Duquesne University and was named to Duquesne University Hall of Fame in 2000, as the second all-time leading scorer in basketball history. Alston played for the Philadelphia 76ers (1994 – 1996) and the Atlanta Hawks (1996-1997) before playing internationally where he won a championship in three different leagues, two Euro Cup championships, and was named a Finals MVP. Alston began his coaching career with the Houston Rockets (2012-15) before joining the NBA G League as an assistant and head coach for the Westchester Knicks (2015-22) and an assistant coach with the College Park Skyhawks (2022-23). He also has coached internationally in Canada and Mexico.
Alston is known for his leadership, professionalism, and player development expertise having coached over 16 NBA Call-Ups during his coaching career. Derrick is a father of two children, Derrick Jr. currently playing pro-basketball in Italy and daughter Avery, a Sophomore at Spelman College.
